Imam Gassan Solomon, recognised as playing a "pivotal" role in the political development of the SA Muslim community, died on Wednesday afternoon. He was 68 years old.His son, Naaser said he had died at home with his relatives at his bedside. Solomon was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year. Treatment proved unsuccessful and the cancer later spread to his bones.Solomon was a member of the UDF and an ANC MP serving in three administrations. He was the former administrator of the Muslim Judicial Council and imam of the Claremont Main Road mosque. He was one of the founding members of Muslim radio station Voice of the Cape. The radio station recently paid tribute to Solomon, broadcasting the story of his life and the influence he had over the community, which Nasser said "lifted his spirits" during his last days.
