ANC Juju’s bling tune

THIS corrupt practic e must stop. Far too few benefit from Black Economic Empowerment.

This is the stock response from ANC and government officials when quizzed about the skewed benefits of BEE and contracts.
But yesterday our governing champions of democracy were singing a different tune. No, it’s a song that often reaches a crescendo when Julius Malema is involved.
Juju Baby was – once again – front page news for what objective citizens would say are the wrong reasons.
The ANC Youth League head honcho was exposed as one of the biggest beneficiaries of government contracts in Limpopo, raking in at least R100million.
Nothing wrong with Malema making some clean money from the public purse. But for one man to cash in so much from such a poor province is a stinker.
Remember, there are hundreds if not thousands of other people still clamouring for just one tender.
Remember, too, that some in the tripartite alliance – and government – have come out openly about how BEE has made and still makes the rich richer and the poor poorer.
Reminds us of a former Thabo Mbeki ally who asked: “Who said BEE meant every black man will be rich?”


It calls for time on issuing contracts. The least the government can do is get totally independent people to decide on who gets what, how and why.
This is the only way to stop the apparent disinclination to completely end the rot in this tender business. It will spell the end of the duplicity of those in charge.
