Azapo leader says he’s ready to quit

AFTER 15 years at the helm of the Azanian People’s Organisation Mosibudi Mangena says he is ready to call it a day in active politics.

The former minister of science and technology, who served under Thabo Mbeki and later Kgalema Motlanthe, said the black consciousness movement needed fresh blood to take over from him.
Mangena, pictured, who is in Limpopo this week, took the blame for the party’s dwindling fortunes, saying: “For Azapo to grow it will have to talk the language of the ordinary people. My main regret is the failure to take Azapo out of liberation politics to party politics.
“This has dealt the party a major blow. We have not been able to move out of revolutionary politics,” he said.
Mangena, 62, who was born in Tzaneen in Limpopo, said he had not done enough to grow the party – having failed to produce good results in the past two elections.
He said the ordinary people in informal settlements, townships and villages wanted tangible results that would translate into a positive change of their social and economic conditions.
Mangena, who is Azapo’s sole MP, is not certain whether he will continue as the party’s public representative in the National Assembly.
