Independent state for for aba Thembu
Angry king Dalindyebo seeks independent state
2009-12-23 12:00
The king of the abaThembu, facing a 15-year jail sentence for a string of violent crimes, has hit on a novel solution to his legal woes: he plans to form an independent state.
The announcement was made on Tuesday in a statement issued by his lawyer Votani Majola.
It followed an earlier ultimatum that President Jacob Zuma publicly apologise to the abaThembu tribe for the “humiliation” of the king, Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo, in court.
The Justice for King Dalindyebo Campaign, which Majola heads, had also demanded that all charges against the king be scrapped and that the government pay R80 billion in compensation.
Dalindeybo was sentenced to jail by an Mthatha judge earlier this month for offences including culpable homicide, kidnapping, arson and assault with intent to commit grievous bodily harm.
He is on bail pending appeal.
In the statement on Tuesday Majola said the abaThembu would “withdraw from the South African government” on January 6 to form an independent state.
This was an “executive decision” by the king.
“The official withdrawal notice will be delivered to the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa in Cape Town on the 06/01/2010 at midday by the delegation of AbaThembu to be led by His Majesty King Dalindyebo,” said Majola.
This would be followed by talks on transitional arrangements which it was anticipated that the South African government would finance.
Zuma had been notified, Majola said.
He said the state of Thembuland would include at least Kwazulu-Natal, the Eastern, Western and Northern Cape, and parts of the Free State and Gauteng.
The task team said in a statement released last week that it had information that suggested that the abaThembu were the largest tribe in South Africa with estimated members “in excess of 10 million or so”.
“There is also information that suggests that about 60% of the land in South Africa legitimately belongs to AbaThembu,” it said.
“Johannesburg and Durban are among the cities that are built on our land. We have no reason to disbelieve this information.”
It said Dalindyebo’s trial was in fact political persecution, driven by the African National Congress and aimed at toppling the king and installing a “puppet leader”.
The criminal charges against Dalindyebo stemmed from violence against his subjects in the Tyhalara area in the early 1990s, during which a woman and children were kidnapped, homes burned and youths assaulted, of whom one died.
As head of the abaThembu, Dalindyebo is Nelson Mandela’s tribal chief.
He is a former Umkhonto we Sizwe operative.

Xhosa Monarch Puts High Price on His Independence
Johannesburg — IN WHAT sounds like an April Fool's joke, a Xhosa king desperate to avoid serving a prison sentence is threatening to form an independent state, taking 60% of SA's land surface with him.
King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo of the abaThembu - who was recently sentenced to 15 years in jail - said this week his kingdom would "withdraw from the South African government" on January 6. The criminal charges against Dalindyebo stemmed from violence against his subjects in the Tyhalara area in the early 1990s, during which a woman and children were kidnapped, homes burnt and youths assaulted, resulting in the death of one . He has won leave to appeal his sentence.
In a "very urgent" withdrawal notice apparently sent to President Jacob Zuma , Dalindyebo's lawyer Votani Majola said the relationship between the government and the abaThembu tribe "has irretrievably broken down".
"With effect from January 6 2010 technically the South African government will not have jurisdiction over the land that belongs to abaThembu tribe. We hope that your government will respect this position. After this date it is our instructions that talks about the transitional arrangement should commence as soon as possible. It is anticipated that the South African government will finance all transitional arrangements," reads the notice.
Zuma's spokesman Vincent Magwenya said yesterday the president had not received the notice. "We have seen media reports and we have noted these reports."
The Justice for King Dalindyebo Campaign, which Majola heads, claims the tribe owns the entire province of KwaZulu-Natal. They claim the abaThembu tribe would take over the Eastern, Western and Northern Cape and "certain portions" of Gauteng.
Dalindyebo's representatives have also sent an ultimatum to Zuma to publicly apologise to the abaThembu tribe for the "humiliation" of the king, in court.
The campaign had also demanded that all charges against the king be scrapped and that the government pay R80bn in compensation.

I don't know what to make of this, but I am sure that this will not go down quietly.
Re: Independent state for for aba Thembu
If you think for one moment that the ANC will hand you those provinces, like the idiot de Klerk did when he negotiated the country away from the whites, think again!
This country, together with all its riches belongs to the ANC. This is what we fought for, this is what we shall have. This is our country.

Re: Independent state for for aba Thembu
yes Zuma admitted that he is happy that when the top ANC people go over the mountain the running of the country will be in good hands and was speaking of Julius Malema. I know he won't be a great leader not for the youth only but for all. What concerns me is he stays in Sandton(expensive), drive a top of the range SUV(expensive) and wear designer clothes(expensive) What about the rest that suffers? Does he care about us at all?

Re: Independent state for for aba Thembu
I see in the newspapers that there was some kind of correspondence between the King and the president, and now they have decided to withdraw the claims.
I am very dissapointed. It now appears that the claims was only politically motivated, where I really thought that it was done with the people's interest in mind.
There is however a few of us that will continue the struggle, until justice is served.

EASTERN Cape monarchs and the Zulu kingdom have broken their silence and dismissed the AbaThembu’s territorial claims as “ridiculous”.
One kingdom has even written to Parliament to object to the AbaThembu secession.
This comes after AbaThembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo’s lawyer Votani Majola served secession papers on Parliament on January14, declaring their independence from South Africa.
The AbaThembu are claiming the whole of the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape, Northern Cape, part of Free State and part of Gauteng.
Although the AmaGcaleka and AmaRharhabe of the Xhosa nation and other kings have not yet objected to the authorities, one of the Xhosa tribes, AmaKwayi, has written to Parliament to object .
“On behalf of the Xhosa nation, on territorial grounds, I hereby register an objection to the claim of AbaThembu to secede from South Africa,” King Ngconde’s Royal Council chairperson, Prince Vela Balfour-Noyi, wrote to the Speaker on Thursday .
Speaking to the Daily Dispatch, the council’s spokesperson, Siganga Mxiki, said the AmaXhosa had been so quiet that speculation about the territorial secession claim may seem to be true.
“They can physically move away to their identified destination leaving behind the land of the AmaXhosa, which they found on their arrival in Xhosaland,” said Mxiki.
The AmaXhosa said they were unshaken by the territorial claim.
“The said claim is just a joke. The AbaThembu absolutely have no claim whatsoever over our territory as AmaXhosa, they know that. This claim needs not to be entertained,” said Nkosi Xhanti Sigcawu of AmaGcaleka, the senior house of the Xhosa nation.
AmaRharhabe spokesperson Prince Zolile Burns-Ncamashe also ridiculed the AbaThembu claim.
“Isn’t that a utopian fantasy?
“There is no stage in history where the Thembus ever occupied the land which is currently occupied by the Xhosas – both east and west of the Kei River.”
The AmaXhosa are divided into two entities – AmaGcaleka on the east side of the Kei River and AmaRharhabe on the west.
Burns-Ncamashe said that the claim had the potential to exacerbate the gravity of challenges that seemed to overwhelm the Thembu royal house.
“I will probably urge that they devise other ways with which to handle and manage the challenges.
“I am very much concerned that these claims by Majola may be construed as tendencies typical of illusions of grandeur which would be a bit unfortunate,” he said.
There are six kings in the province. Of the six, two are for the two kingdoms of AbaThembu – the AbaThembu BakaDalindyebo and Western Thembuland led by Dalindyebo and King Lwandile Matanzima, respectively.
But Matanzima has since distanced himself from the controversial claim.
Both the AmaMpondo and the Zulu kingdoms also dismissed the claim, saying that they attached no seriousness to the matter.
“This is all a joke. It is something that we wish not to make a priority,” said Western Pondoland kingdom spokesperson Prince Mlimandela Ndamase.
Prince Mbonisi Zulu, the spokesperson of the Zulu royal family, laughed off the claim.
“This is crazy. It is absolutely ridiculous. People go to bed and sleep and dream and make wayward claims of something that they know nothing about. Nobody can claim our land,” said Zulu. — lulamilef@dispatch.co.za

Re: Independent state for for aba Thembu
The Zulu can laugh as much as he want, it will not make the problems go away.
The real reason why he is laughing is because he know that the Zulu's have their leader in place, and he will apoint only Zulu's in top places. Then they have nothing to worry about. We as the rest of South Africa must then bow down to these zulu's. Not me, i will not accept this.
Africa is for Africans not Africa is for Zulu's
Time must come
